It's May 1 Time to Celebrate May Day and More

It's May 1! In the USA it's May Day. As a child we always celebrate May 1 with a dance around the May Pole. I always wondered why we stopped such a fun tradition. Seems like our kids could sure use some good fun now a days.

What is May Day?
May Day was also celebrated by some early European settlers of the American continent. In some parts of the United States, May Baskets are made. These baskets are small and usually filled with flowers or treats and left at someone's doorstep. The basket giver would ring the bell and run away. The person receiving the basket would try to catch the fleeing giver. If they caught the person, a kiss was to be exchanged.[citation needed]

Modern May Day ceremonies in the U.S. vary greatly from region to region and many unite both the holiday's "Green Root" (pagan) and "Red Root" (labor) traditions[6]. Among the largest is the May Day Parade and Pageant created by In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre, an event that has happened every year since 1975 in Minneapolis and now attracts some 35,000 people.

May 1 also is recognized in the U.S. as Law Day.

May 1 is also the beginning of our Sea Shells and Snails May 1-7 Launch on eBay.

Springtime Swapping

Spring is in the air and at Age Before Beauty we are enjoying it!! We had a Spring Swap!!
Each of us got the same pattern from Sandi, of Shweet Potato Dolls n Patterns
and we used that pattern for the swap. The pattern was for the doll body only and we each created a spring doll for our surprise buddy.
Here's the Springtime Doll I made for Karen. She went all the way to England :) She holds a carrot with Sweet Annie and a couple fabric tulips.

And Woot Woot here is the Springtime Doll I got from my Swap Buddy Ilona, She is so adorable!! And Ilona made my dolly and I matching scarfs :) Aww, I fell in love as soon as I opened the box!! Shes so adorable!! Look at those eyes!! She'll be part of my Easter Center piece this year!! Thanks so much Ilona, I truly just love her!!

My name is Ilóna (pronounced EEE-LOW-NA) Kabai (pronounced “K” BYE) and yes, that is an accent mark over the “o” in my first name! My name is Hungarian.

I was born and grew up in Northern California. I’m 57 years young! I’m married to my wonderful husband Nick. I have one daughter who lives in California and two wonderful Grandsons, ages 11 and 8. I graduated from High School in 1969 and I worked my way through college in the early 1970’s by sewing and selling Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls and other handmades. When someone needed anything from a Wedding dress to a tablecloth to PJ’s, I sewed, crafted, painted all kinds of needfuls. I would take orders for my Raggedy Dolls and used the money I earned to pay my tuition and book fees… Keep in mind this was pre-internet days and I sure wish Ebay and computers were around back then! I graduated from college in 1973 and then attended graduate school to complete a teaching credential. I’m a former teacher having taught for 11 years in California and was in the U.S. Army Reserve at the same time. After teaching for 11 years in California inter-city schools, I decided to go back on active duty and made a career of the Army. While serving in the Army, I was an Operations and Training Officer and a Linguist. I retired from the U. S. Army on January 1, 2006, after completing 24 years of Active duty and several years of Reserve Duty. My Army Career took me all over the world and presently I live in Northern Idaho with Nick and 2 cats, Bizzie and Shelly. Nick is an Army Veteran as well….between the two of us, we have close to 50 years of serving our great country. Hooah!

My Father, my Grandmother, and my Great Grandmother were my biggest influences and inspirations. At the age of 3 my Grandmother would plop me on her lap and taught me to “guide fabric” through her old treadle sewing machine, of course, she would “pump” the peddles (treadles?) while I “sewed”. We were sewing sheer white curtains with small red dots that were fuzzy. These were for her dining room, which had 6 or 8 long, floor to ceiling windows. I remember being fascinated by the whole process and from that day on, I was hooked on sewing.
My Great-Grandmother taught me to knit, crochet and tat.
My Father taught me how to tool leather, hook rugs, knit on a circular loom, cut glass, needlepunch, paint, cook, bake and speak Hungarian.
By age 5 or 6 I crocheted little poodle dogs that fit over bottles. And my Dad and I would sell them at Craft fairs along with butter cookies that my Dad baked. Back in those days, we didn’t have to worry about fees or obtaining a permit or filing taxes when we participated in Craft Fairs. We just showed up with our “goods”. We didn’t even have to bring a table or chairs, all was furnished.
I’ve always loved all kinds of arts and crafts but I guess my overall favorite is sewing.
In 2001 I decided to make and sell my own patterns and did this as a tribute to my Dad, who really inspired me from A to Z. My Dad passed away later the same year, in 2001. My first pattern was called “My Soldiers” and appeared in Country Marketplace magazine (which I’m sorry to say, is now out of business). “My Soldiers” were primitive style stuffed soft sculpture heads and faces that wore different military hats on their heads and were placed on top of a quart sized Mason jar that could hold the ingredients for “Ranger Cookies” and the like. The pattern was cute, but didn’t catch on that well. I was still on Active Duty at the time, and with “war” looming, I didn’t have a lot of time to work on my crafts…but I knew one day I would retire from the Army and have time to do what I love to do!

Presently I love to make Primitive Raggedy Dolls, and other prim home décor, ornies, and other needfuls. I am designing and working on more patterns and hope to have them up on the internet soon.

Springtime Challenge and Swap with the Beauties

Hello all we would love to invite all our readers to join in our 2010 Springtime Challenge and Swap.

The holidays are past us and many of us are snowed in and others of us are having higher temps than normal for this time of year. We thought it would be the perfect time for us to launch our new Springtime Challenge and Swap.

Each person who signs up will create a Spring related Doll using the same pattern (it will be emailed to you in a PDF form). The pattern will be for the doll body parts only, you will create your doll and dress it anyway you want. That doll will be swapped with a surprise buddy.
What that means is you create your doll using the pattern your way and you will send it to one of the other beauties who signs up on the list. They will create their doll and send it to someone else (not you) but you will receive a doll in the swap from another beauty on the list.

Our Springtime Challenge and Swap sign up start today and sign up ends at midnight February 9, 2010.

You will receive your swap buddy, pattern and info provided from your buddy on February 10, 2010 at the email address you provide when you sign up.

Swaps will need to be mailed priority mail with delivery confirmation to be mailed no later than March 24. You can always mail it out early if you want. Please remember that it is important that each person who signs up for this Challenge and Swap follow through.

Time times of need we all come together

One of the things I love about being part of a warm and loving group of web friends is how we all come together in times of need. One of our mods lost her mom this week and we would all like to offer our warm thoughts and special prayers for the whole family of Daizy Donna. I have to say I have never met Daizy in person but we have become close friends because of our eBay group and the internet. It is amazing how the web can link via computer so many hearts together. Being homebound it is my lifesaver.
Daizy Donna's mom was a shining example and inspiration to me and should be to all. She fought long and hard and beat stage 4 cancer only to have her heart give way and she went to be with the Lord on her birthday.

Donna one of our beauties has lite a candle for you and your family in honor of your mom. We love you and keep you in our hearts and thoughts.
May the Lord hold your family in his loving arms and I told my Mom and Dad in law to show her the ropes and how to come back and visit you.

I had the most wonderful time tonight just strolling through this beauty's eBay shoppe. My daughter has a long list of "wishes" for Christmas and her birthday and JUST because days.
On eBay her username is Garden*Spirit... Her eBay store is called The Tattered Shed.
First off let me tell you make sure you have some free time when you go visit her shoppe. The pictures and descriptions are wonderful. YOU find yourself reading each item and praying you win the lottery so you can start collecting her creations.
My youngest Kassy just started working as a kennel tech at a petstore and fell in love with a Bulldog so this handmade BULLDOG ornament grabbed me right off the bat.

OMG what a beautiful creation this is from bbprims. This pinkeep would be perfect on an styled craft area and it not only works to hold your pins but also to inspire us!

Description
This sweet little "Believe" needle punch pinkeep (or pillow) was punched by me using 3 strands of DMC floss. The colors are simply beautiful -- the photos do not do it justice. Absolutely beautiful! The colors are shades of light green, mustard yellow for the stars and the word "Believe" in black. Lightly filled and scented with an old-timey vanilla cinnamon fragrance.

I handstitched a vintage piece of denim onto the back and then trimmed the edges with a prim whipstitch to give it a finished look. The pinkeep measures approximately 4 3/4 x 3 3/4 inches. It would look beautiful in any room of your prim home.

Autism Awareness Charity Auction Preview

August the 1st will be here shortly and when it is please come by eBay and check out our Auction for Autism Awareness. Our eBay group wants to do what we can to give back to our society and one way is to help those in need.

Autism is a "disablity" that is on the rise. It has always been here we are just recognizing it more and more now. There are so many levels to Autism and no one really knows what is causing this in our children and adults. Autism spectrum as it is called ranges from those special little ones (and big ones too) who need constant help to those who are very highly Intelligent and have Asperger’s syndrome.

No matter the place on the spectrum these special Angels and their caregivers need our help. Studies in the methods of working with these Angels and also Research in to what causes and how to help these folks takes a great deal of money, and Age*Before*Beauty wants to do a what we can to help these special Angels.

So starting August 1 our eBay group will be listing all kinds of wonderful creations with parts or all of the proceeds to go to Autism Not For Profits Worldwide. Each artsits will decide on the Autism Charity they want to support and eBay helps us by sending the money directly to those charities. We will be adding creations through August 7. So you will be able to find our listings for a good part of August. Just search eBay to find us by typing in AB4B Autism in the search box. Meet Renee Tousignant, owner of Crows Roost Prims, Kingsford, MIRenee has been a "primitive style" artist for approx. 12 yrs. She has been crafting for over 40 yrs. "Growing up" Renee says, "there were 2 places I loved to visit, 2 different aunts homes--becuz they would pull out their craft supplies for me! My Auntie Julia was very creative with outdoor treasures especially (pinecones, flowers, vines, twigs, etc) and would have some project for me to do while she visited with my parents. My Auntie Eleanor had paste and oodles of colored paper, crayons, colored pencils, paper dolls & dried beans! We would sit at the kitchen table and craft for hours."

WHATS YOUR FAVORITE CRAFT? I'd have to say sewing. I started making my own patterns almost 2 years ago. It was so much easier before making patterns, to just grab my material and start cutting & sewing. I made lots of OOAKS (one of a kinds) and just recently started my OOAKS again and selling on eBay. Rug hooking is also a favorite.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM PATTI? I live in Irwin, Pennsylvania, a small town in Western PA, just 1/2 hour South of Pittsburgh.

WHEN DID YOU START CRAFTING? I've been crafting probably all along since I was first married, 33 years ago decorating my home. I started selling on ebay in 2006 after much nudging by my family since I always did the Dried Arrangements, Wreaths and Prim decorating of my house.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CRAFT? Probably doing Pin keep Make-Dos, I love to do them.. Picking the quilt to use, The lace, The Pins, Buttons to decorate with, then the aging of them. I love to see the way they will turn out. I Also Love Stitching, Creating the Samplers and linens, Watching the design come alive in the frame picked to house them when finished.

Onion skin dying 1st try

Onion Skin Dying wool for the very first time
Well, it has been warm, almost early summer-like week here in PA. We have been told that it will start cooling down and winter will show up again in the next few days. Ugh! But, this has inspired me to try some wool dying for the first time. I accomplished three different types of dying all in one morning. My best dye job was the onion skin dying. It was easier than I thought and with the help of a book called THE COMPLETE BOOK OF RUG HOOKING by Joan Moshimer,1975 and reprint 1989 and a fellow blogger Rugs O mine by Kathy. She is a fellow rug hooker that does awesome work and has been nice enough to answer my questions and give me some much needed advice. You can find her blog as well as some of her work on Etsy. Her seller name is woolfind. I followed the directions almost to the tee.

I began with eight ¼ yard pieces of Dorr Wool. (You can use more or less, but since this was my first time I decided I didn't want to waste great wool on a foul-up)My deepest darkest color was burgundy, then a rosy mauve, then a paler pink and then a subtle pink. I added antique white pieces for the final touch.

I first soaked the wool in warm water in the sink with a mild soap detergent for about 2-3 minutes (until the wool was wet). I then used a vintage white enamel cooking pot for my dying chamber. After the wool was wet, I placed one piece of dark burgundy and two pieces of rosy pink still wet and not wrung out, in the bottom of the chamber. I then added onion skins from yellow onions on the top of the layer of fabric. (I have been saving the skins for some weeks). I scattered them on the wool but haphazardly. Then, I applied salt(about 3-4 tablespoons) and sprinkled that on top of the skins. My first layer was ready.

Next, I added two pieces of pale pink and one piece of rosy pink. I did the same with this layer adding the skins and then the salt. Last, but not least, I added two pieces of antique white on the top layer. Finally, I added the onion skins and salt.

Now I was ready. I took about 6 quarts of hot water and began to add this onto the already wet and soaking wool. I only added enough water to cover the wool. I did not fill it to a saturated consistency. You will be seeing the burgundy and pinks already rising to the top from the other wools at the bottom. The onion skins bring out a natural orangey yellow. You then place the pot on the stove. Use a low flame, cover and steam the wool for about 45 minutes. Voila!!! You are now finished!

I took a small strainer and placed it in the drain of my sink. You do not want those skins going down the disposal or sink. !!!! Messy. I then poured the water and the wool out. At the same time I ran cold water onto the wool to cool the fabric and help set the color. (The salt does that for you as well). After the wool was cooled I took the wool and ran it on a low heat in the dryer to dry. I couldn't put it outside that day because it was 32 degrees and raining!

Well, you can see how my wool pieces turned out in the picture. They are mottled and interesting to use in your rug hooking pieces. I also spot dye a few pieces as well. I will describe that at a different time. I used all Dorr Wools. Many of their colors complemented the color process and made the process very easy. Good morning and Happy St. Patricks Day!!!

Now I know, must of us have had the traditional boiled dish...but you have not lived until you have had this version. Once you try it this way, you will never go back to boiling. This is just so good. Enjoy and happy eating!!

Irish Corned Beef

Corned Beef
(I like to use the marinade corned beef that comes with a herb packet)

Wet Rub:

1/2 cup brown mustard
1 tbs cider vinegar
packet of herbs
1 tbs black pepper
2 tbs garlic powder

Mix well into a nice paste. Rub paste all over the corned beef. Place corned beef in heavy baking dish lined with cooking parchment or place into your crock pot. Pour in 1-2 pints of ale or dark beer. Allow to simmer on low heat for hours, until tender. Oven temp should slow roast around 300 degrees, crock pots on medium setting.

I like to put mine in the oven or crock pot in the morning, letting it slow roast through out the day. If you need more liquid, add in some beef broth. Makes for a very tender and flavorful roast.

I add potatoes around the roast. To make roasted potatoes, just add sliced chunks of potato to a bowl. Toss with garlic powder, salt, pepper and a little rosemary. Drizzle on a little bit of olive oil and stir well. Surround your roast with the mixture and bake. They are so good.

Creamed Cabbage

Head Green Cabbage (Cut into chunks)
1 Med Onion (diced)

Pint Heavy Cream
1/4 Cup Butter
1/2 tbs- Cinnamon & Nutmeg (clove optional)
1 tsp Cider Vinegar

Add cabbage & onions to a casserole dish. In a sauce pan, over low heat...melt butter into the heavy cream. Stir in the cider vinegar and add spices. Stir well and pour over the cabbage. Cover with lid or heavy foil. Let bake about 40 mins or until tender. Let sit and cool for about 10 mins, then stir and serve.
